Evgeniy Ogorodnik: A Hero Without a Weapon

According to ДСНС: Since 2015, Evgeniy Ogorodnik has been serving as a driver with the 30th State Fire and Rescue Unit based in Chopovychi, Zhytomyr region, working within Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES). His responsibilities include maintaining the firefighting vehicle’s readiness, ensuring quick deployment of the crew, and managing the delivery of extinguishing agents. Evgeniy’s career began with his very first emergency response, and since then, he has faced numerous demanding situations.

Significant Moments in His Career

One of the most impactful events in Evgeniy’s service was responding to a severe road accident that claimed five lives, an experience that deeply affected him. In May 2026, he played a crucial role in suppressing a massive forest fire in the Polissky Nature Reserve. This blaze lasted 12 days and scorched nearly 500 hectares, with firefighters battling intense smoke, extreme heat, and exhausting conditions.

Evgeniy stresses that success in such dangerous tasks depends heavily on rigorous training and calm decision-making.

“Courage is essential, but the key is to never panic. Panic is the worst enemy in our line of work,”

he explains. He also highlights the importance of emotional control during emergencies:

“When fighting fires, you don’t let emotions take over-you focus on the job. Feelings come later.”

Outside of his demanding role, Evgeniy enjoys riding motorcycles and values time spent with his family. He believes rescuers are always prepared to face the toughest challenges:

“Where others see impassable terrain, we simply drive where even walking is difficult.”

Toward the end of the conversation, he shares a hopeful message for peace:

“Right now, we all share one dream-to see the war end as soon as possible. That’s what everyone longs for.”

Evgeniy Ogorodnik continues to dedicate himself daily to saving lives, often putting his own safety on the line. His work exemplifies the vital role firefighters play amid Ukraine’s ongoing crises, not only by managing emergencies but also by bolstering public morale. The professionalism and emotional resilience he describes are especially crucial given the heightened risks during wartime. As Evgeniy Ogorodnik continues to demonstrate exceptional bravery in the line of duty, it's worth noting that many other rescuers also receive recognition for their heroic efforts. Recently, on the eve of Ukrainian Flag Day, 16 members of the State Emergency Service were honored with state awards for their courageous actions. These acknowledgments highlight the relentless dedication of those who risk their lives to protect others.
