Ukraine Extends Martial Law and Mobilization Measures

According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed legislation extending martial law and nationwide mobilization for an additional 90 days. This extension ensures these measures will remain in effect until at least May 4, 2026. This marks the 18th time these emergency provisions have been renewed since Russia's full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The ongoing conflict necessitates these measures to maintain national defense and security.

The bills, now signed into law, were published on the official website of the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament. Parliament had approved the measures in mid-January. The extension of martial law received 330 votes from lawmakers, while the mobilization extension was backed by 312 deputies. The relevant national security committee had previously endorsed the decrees unanimously.

  • Law No. 4757 (draft No. 14366) approves the decree on extending martial law and takes effect on the day of its official publication.
  • Law No. 4758 (draft No. 14367) concerns the extension of the general mobilization period; this document will come into force on February 3, 2026.

Extending these measures is a critical step for ensuring Ukraine's defense capabilities amid the prolonged Russian aggression. The decision underscores the necessity of sustaining the efforts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and maintaining the state's readiness for potential future security challenges. These policies are expected to continue shaping the country's domestic politics, economic conditions, and relations with international partners for the foreseeable future.
