Special attention is given to the risk of new outbreaks in the Indian Ocean region. This infection has already infected more than 5.6 billion people in 119 countries and is accompanied by high fever, joint pain, and prolonged disability.

“We see history repeating itself,” emphasized Diana Rojas Alvarez, a WHO medical worker.

The last outbreak of the virus occurred in the islands of the Indian Ocean at the end of 2025 and is now spreading to other regions, including Madagascar, Somalia, Kenya, and Southeast Asia, including India. The emergency alarm was triggered by the transmission of the virus in Europe, where cases have already been reported in France and Italy.
