In 30 Seconds, Ukrainian Drone Operators Destroyed a Russian Airborne Forces Flag in Sumy Oblast

Destruction of an enemy flag in the Sumy region
Успішна операція українських дронів: знищення ворожого прапора в Сумській області за тридцять секунд.

What Happened in Velyka Pysarivka

According to Рубрика — Суспільство: Ukrainian defenders in Sumy Oblast destroyed a Russian Airborne Forces (VDV) flag that occupation troops had tried to raise in the settlement of Velyka Pysarivka. According to the 105th Territorial Defense Brigade, Russian forces did not actually enter the village; instead, they used a drone to try to hoist the flag. The episode lasted roughly 30 seconds before Ukrainian drone operators destroyed it.

The 105th Brigade responded with sarcasm, saying Russian forces 'decided to script another victory for themselves and raise their VDV rag-flag in Velyka Pysarivka.' The brigade added that the event was so 'majestic' it lasted... a whole 30 seconds, and that 'enemy rags don't stay long on Ukrainian land.'

Wider Pattern

The incident fits into a broader symbolic battle across the front lines, where flags are used to claim territory and shape narratives. Similar episodes involving Ukrainian flags have occurred previously:

  • In January, units from the Khartia group regained control of the city council building in Kupiansk, Kharkiv Oblast, and raised the national flag over it.
  • In July, service members from the 425th Separate Assault Regiment 'Skelia' completed clearing Kostiantynivka, Donetsk Oblast, and raised the Ukrainian flag over the town.

The Velyka Pysarivka episode is thus another example of Ukrainian forces actively disrupting Russian attempts to plant their symbols on Ukrainian territory. It also highlights the psychological dimension of the war: every destroyed enemy symbol reinforces Ukraine's resolve to defend its sovereignty, and in an information-heavy conflict such moments carry significant weight.
