Russian Casualties Outpace Recruitment in 2025, Says Ukrainian Commander Syrskyi
Russian Army Casualties in 2025
According to Главком: In an interview with the French publication Le Monde, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Oleksandr Syrskyi, stated that in 2025, Russian army losses have exceeded the number of new recruits mobilized. According to his figures, Russia mobilized and conscripted 406,000 individuals, yet the total Russian military casualties, including killed and wounded, amount to approximately 418,000 soldiers. This attrition rate presents a significant long-term challenge for Russia's military capacity.
Syrskyi noted that Ukrainian defense forces incapacitate about 1,000 to 1,100 Russian military personnel daily. This demonstrates the intensity of combat and the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces against the aggressor. He also stated that the city of Kupiansk is 97% under the control of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, a key indicator of the strategic situation on the front line.
Technological Warfare
In 2025, both sides continue to actively employ advanced weaponry. Each side uses approximately 6,000 to 8,000 FPV drones and hundreds of reconnaissance drones daily. This highlights the changing nature of the war, where technology is becoming increasingly decisive. Over the past year, Ukraine struck 719 targets deep inside Russian territory, inflicting damages exceeding $15 billion.
Syrskyi emphasized that the war is not at a stalemate and is being waged across all domains: land, air, and sea. The changing essence of the conflict, along with the emergence of new technologies like drones, has altered the psychology of warfare. He noted that the infantry soldier has become an especially valuable resource in this new reality, where technological and human elements are deeply intertwined.
These figures point to serious losses on the part of Russian troops, which could impact future mobilization and war strategy. The high intensity of combat and the use of cutting-edge technologies underscore shifts in military tactics that may determine the course of the conflict in the near future. Ukraine's control over Kupiansk also reflects the importance of territorial gains within the broader strategy of defense and counter-offensive on the front.
