Military Toll in Russia’s War Against Ukraine

According to Главком: A study by the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) has recorded that total military casualties in Russia’s war against Ukraine have exceeded two million people over four years of conflict. Since February 2022, 1.4 million Russian service members have been killed or wounded, including 450,000 fatalities. Ukrainian military losses are estimated between 525,000 and 625,000 personnel, with 125,000 to 150,000 killed.

On the front lines, 250,000 Ukrainian troops face more than 400,000 Russian soldiers. In 2026, Russia’s monthly losses range from 30,000 to 34,000 personnel, while Moscow’s recruitment rate is roughly 27,000 new volunteers per month. By spring 2026, Russian forces had lost a net total of about 400 square kilometers of occupied territory. In February, Elon Musk blocked Russian troops from using Starlink, disrupting their combat operations.

Global Challenges and Expert Commentary

In 2024–2025, North Korea deployed over 10,000 soldiers to help Russia reclaim territory in the Kursk region. Last month saw the largest drone attack on Moscow to date, with Russia’s Defense Ministry claiming to have shot down 419 unmanned aerial vehicles. This week, the Russian capital and Crimea came under renewed strikes.

The CSIS report comes as U.S. President Donald Trump has effectively stepped back from direct involvement in the war. Trump stated that the conflict is not a priority for Washington, which only sells weapons to Ukraine, describing America’s role as more of a humanitarian mission.

“This is the bleakest period of the war for Russia, which has now reached ordinary Russians through economic decline, rising prices, body bags, and strikes on cities.” - Seth G. Jones

Ukraine’s supporters in the U.S. Congress stress the need to stop Russia in order to protect other NATO allies. According to CSIS, without increased pressure from the United States and Europe, Putin will continue the war despite massive losses. Earlier, Russian dictator Vladimir Putin stated that Moscow’s main goal remains the complete capture of Donbas and Novorossiya, insisting that the situation for Russia is supposedly under control.

These figures highlight a severe humanitarian and military crisis unfolding in both Ukraine and Russia. Rising casualties and new international challenges-such as North Korea’s active involvement-underscore the conflict’s complexity and its potential consequences for regional security. CSIS’s casualty estimates point to the need for global efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region, as well as the importance of continued international support for Ukraine.

As the conflict continues to evolve, recent updates from Ukraine's General Staff highlight further significant losses for Russian forces, with estimates now exceeding 1.39 million personnel. This alarming trend underscores the ongoing toll of the war on both sides and raises critical questions about the future of military engagements in the region.
