What are the fines for crayfish catching
З початку грудня лов раків заборонений: які штрафи очікують порушників.

In Ukraine, a large-scale ban on the catch of crayfish is being introduced during the periods of mating, carrying eggs, and the first molting. The restrictions will cover most water bodies in the country and will be in effect until the summer of 2026. This is reported by the State Fisheries Agency.

According to the agency's decision, from December 15, 2025, to June 30, 2026, the catch of crayfish will be prohibited in the Kyiv, Kaniv, Kremenchuk, Kamianske, and Dnipro reservoirs. In all other fishery water bodies, the ban will come into effect earlier – from December 1, 2025. Violators face significant penalties: from administrative fines to criminal responsibility, as well as compensation for damages in the amount of 3332 UAH for each caught crayfish.

Which water bodies are under restrictions for crayfish catching

According to scientific observations, the wide-clawed crayfish dominates in the water bodies of Transcarpathia – a species listed in the Red Book. Its catch is prohibited throughout the year. In Ukraine, there are generally three types of crayfish: long-clawed, wide-clawed, and thick-clawed. The last two have a protective status and are completely excluded from industrial and amateur fishing.

The decision to impose restrictions is explained by the sharp decline in population numbers. Negative impacts include environmental problems, pollution of water bodies, and poaching, which particularly increases before the New Year period. That is why control measures are being strengthened in all regions.

What fines are there for crayfish catching from December 1

The State Fisheries Agency reminds that the sanctions are substantial even for a single violation:

  • administrative fine or criminal liability

  • compensation for damages: 3332 UAH for one crayfish

  • additional fines for using prohibited fishing gear.

The Head of the State Fisheries Agency, Igor Klimenko, emphasized the importance of preserving the species: «River crayfish are not only a valuable food product but also the sanitation of water bodies. The decline in their population harms the natural balance. I urge anglers to be responsible towards these inhabitants and adhere to the restrictions».

Earlier, we reported that in Ukraine, the catch of two species of crayfish is prohibited: those that are under protection.
