Which fish can lead to fines of up to 7225 UAH in Ukraine in 2026

Illegal capture of brook trout may cost the fisherman 7225 UAH for each individual. This is not the standard administrative fine, but rather the compensation for damages that will have to be paid additionally. Responsibility also applies for catching undersized fish and using prohibited gear. This is reported by the Judicial and Legal Newspaper.

What fish incur the largest damages in 2026

The highest compensation is provided for the illegal capture of trout, 7225 UAH for one fish regardless of its weight. For catfish, a compensation of 5117 UAH will be required, for carp 3706 UAH, and for grass carp 3638 UAH.

Pikeperch will cost the offender 3587 UAH, pike 3468 UAH, perch 3162 UAH. For each illegally caught river crayfish, damages of 3332 UAH will be imposed. These amounts are multiplied by the number of individuals caught.

What size fish are allowed to be kept in Ukraine

The rules establish a minimum length for certain species. The European catfish must be at least 80 cm, pike 50 cm, pikeperch 42 cm, and brook trout 20 cm. Smaller individuals must be carefully removed from the hook and returned to the water.

For bream and carp, there is a limit of 35 cm in the Dnipro water reservoirs and 30 cm in other inland waters. White amur and grass carp must reach 60 and 40 cm, respectively. Fishermen must have means to measure the size and weight of their catch. Detailed norms are contained in the current Rules of Amateur Fishing.

Fines for illegal fishing are supplemented by compensation

A typical violation of the rules may result in a warning or a fine ranging from 34 to 170 UAH. For serious violations, including the use of nets, electric rods, or explosives, citizens face fines from 340 to 680 UAH with possible confiscation of fishing gear.

Damage for each illegally caught individual is calculated separately. Therefore, a few fish in a prohibited catch can increase the total amount to tens of thousands of UAH. For substantial harm, criminal liability may also arise.
