Pollution Discovered in the Southern Bug River

According to Главком: State environmental inspectors have identified unknown stains polluting the Southern Bug River in Vinnytsia. The contamination is visible along the stretch between the Kyiv and Central bridges. Specialists from the inspection service, alongside the Vinnytsia Fish Protection Patrol, visited the site to collect surface water samples for detailed laboratory analysis, as confirmed by a regional inspectorate representative.

Analysis Findings and Next Steps

Preliminary test results show dissolved oxygen levels in the water are between 19 and 20 mg per cubic decimeter, far exceeding the minimum standard of 4 mg. No evidence of aquatic life fatalities has been recorded. Law enforcement agencies have been called in to help determine the nature and origin of the pollution.

This environmental incident follows a Russian missile strike on Vinnytsia on March 24, which resulted in the death of Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Borys Avksentiuk. He served as a professor in the Department of Commodity Science, Expertise, and Trade Entrepreneurship. Investigations are currently ongoing into both the river pollution and the consequences of the attack.

“For a rapid response, our inspection specialists jointly with the Vinnytsia Fish Protection Patrol conducted a field visit to the site. During the inspection, surface water samples were taken for subsequent laboratory research,” stated the State Environmental Inspection.

The discovery of pollution in the Southern Bug is a significant event, indicating potential ecological issues requiring urgent attention. The situation is particularly concerning given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has heightened risks to environmental safety and public health. The coordinated efforts of environmental and law enforcement agencies are crucial to identify the pollution source and implement measures to protect the local ecosystem and Vinnytsia residents.

In light of recent environmental concerns, it's important to consider similar incidents, such as the alarming mass fish die-off in Kyiv's Gorashchykha Lake, which has also prompted extensive water quality investigations. Such events highlight the urgent need for thorough assessments of our waterways. For more details on this troubling situation, see our coverage of the mass fish die-off at Gorashchykha Lake.
