The Life and Heroism of Denis Strunnikov
According to Спортивний комітет: Denis Strunnikov, who served under the call sign 'Dio', was killed in action on August 22, 2025, in the Donetsk region. He was 29 years old. His journey into the world of performance began at the age of four, influenced by his mother Tatiana, who worked in a circus. After graduating from a variety and circus college, he toured internationally, performing in countries including Israel, Germany, Estonia, and Kazakhstan.
Military Service and Commemoration
In 2014, while on tour in Luhansk, Denis witnessed the beginning of the seizure of administrative buildings by separatists, an event that likely shaped his future path. In September 2024, he chose to volunteer and joined the 'Artan' special unit of Ukraine's Defence Intelligence (GUR). He died from severe wounds 12 hours after his unit came under 120mm mortar fire near Novomykhailivka in the Kramatorsk district of Donetsk Oblast while withdrawing to a tree line. The war in Ukraine has seen many civilians from diverse professions take up arms to defend their country.
Denis Strunnikov was laid to rest on November 3, 2025, at the Pantheon of Heroes in Ternopil. Posthumously, he was granted the status of Honorary Citizen of Ternopil and received awards from the city of Ivano-Frankivsk and from the Defence Intelligence. He is remembered by those who knew him as both a talented performer and a courageous soldier.
His death underscores the tragic human cost of the conflict, which claims the lives of young people with full lives ahead of them. Strunnikov's transition from the circus ring to the battlefield exemplifies how profound personal experiences can radically alter one's life path. The honors bestowed upon him recognize his contributions to both art and his nation's defense.
