Four Officers Killed in Ambush by Former Soldier in Cherkasy Region
Tragedy Strikes in Ukraine's Cherkasy Region
According to Главком: Four police officers were killed while attempting to serve a search warrant on a suspect wanted for a serious crime in the Cherkasy region. The assailant, a 59-year-old former military serviceman, ambushed and shot the officers. The suspect, a resident of the Korsun district, initially barricaded himself inside his home before later leaving the property and lying in wait near a road in a wooded area.
Details of the Deadly Attack
Investigators, detectives, and officers from a special police unit were involved in the operation. The first victims were community police officers, whom the suspect shot from his vehicle. One community officer was killed and another wounded in this initial attack, which occurred roughly 500 meters from the suspect's home. The gunman, acting from his concealed position, then opened fire on the special police officers who arrived at the scene.
Commenting on the situation, Ivan Vyhivskyi noted that the police were prepared for various scenarios, including an armed confrontation. He stated that the suspect initially communicated calmly, a fact considered in light of his status as a war veteran. However, after police involved the suspect's former comrades in the communication attempt, he quietly left his property undetected.
During the confrontation, the gunman fired additional shots at the wounded special police officers. When one of the wounded officers, who identified himself as a local community officer, encountered the suspect, the gunman told him:
"Alright then, you can live," the suspect said to the officer.
But the assailant later returned to his ambush position and resumed shooting. The shooter was ultimately neutralized.
A memorial service for the fallen officers was held at the St. Michael's Cathedral in Cherkasy. Vyhivskyi expressed the view that veteran status does not justify premeditated murder, particularly acts of such brutality. This incident has sparked public outrage and concern over the safety of police officers while performing their duties. This tragedy highlights the extreme dangers Ukrainian law enforcement can face, even during routine operations. It underscores the critical need for enhanced safety protocols during potentially volatile situations to prevent future losses.
