The former commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Ukrainian ambassador to the United Kingdom Valery Zaluzhny stated in an interview “News Factory” that it is impossible to predict the end of the war, and the key to the outcome is in a realistic assessment of resources and a clear strategy.

The end of the war in Ukraine: Zaluzhny's position

During a conversation with students, Zaluzhny emphasized that one should not trust any forecasts regarding the timelines of the war. According to him, such statements are often made for the sake of publicity, but have no real basis.

«I am an absolute realist and know a little about war. It is impossible to predict the end of war, especially one like in Ukraine. We can only see the factors that affect it,» he noted.

Zaluzhny emphasized that instead of waiting for specific dates, the state should focus on strategic planning and understanding its own capabilities.

Ukraine's victory strategy: what to pay attention to

According to Zaluzhny, the decisive factor will be Ukraine's ability to define its own limits and goals. He outlined the key questions that the country must answer:

  • How many resources the state has to continue the war;

  • What is the real timeframe for conducting hostilities;

  • What goal needs to be achieved in the end;

  • How to avoid losses without achieving a result.

According to him, the lack of a clear strategy leads to the exhaustion of the economy and human resources without a tangible result.

Zaluzhny also separately mentioned the possibility of unforeseen events, so-called «black swans,» which can change the course of the war. At the same time, he emphasized that the country should not rely on chance.

«Don’t believe anyone. Because this war depends on many factors. Everything will depend on how much we ourselves want and realize this desire to conduct the war,» he concluded.

Earlier, on February 23, the Ukrainian ambassador to the United Kingdom Valery Zaluzhny first spoke in English at an event at the Chatham House analytical center in London.
