Record-Breaking Sale of a Rare Super Mario Bros. Copy

According to НВ — Техно: A sealed, untouched copy of the 1986 NES game Super Mario Bros. has fetched an unprecedented $3 million at a Heritage Auctions sale. The game remained completely unopened in its original packaging alongside the NES Control Deck for four decades. This particular cartridge features an intact glossy sticker that was introduced in 1986 and is one of only three known copies from the second production run with this specific label format. It has been graded PSA 9.6 A++.

According to auction organizers, this variant had never before appeared in sealed condition at a public sale, underscoring its extreme rarity. 'In many ways, this is as close as a collector can get to owning the very moment when Super Mario Bros. transformed console video games from a struggling novelty into a permanent fixture of cultural history,' the auction house added.

Unique Origins and Lasting Impact

The game and console originated from the Los Angeles test market, which marked the early stages of Nintendo's expansion into the United States. After 1986, Nintendo switched to shrink-wrap packaging, making this find even more exceptional.

In a separate but related development, a Brazilian funeral company called Bignotto has begun producing colorful Super Mario Bros.-themed coffins. This illustrates how video game culture continues to permeate society, even in the most unexpected areas.

This auction highlights the growing collector interest in rare video game artifacts, reflecting not only their economic value but also their cultural significance. The high sale price also demonstrates how video games have become a vital part of modern pop culture, on par with traditional art and collectibles. The influence of Super Mario Bros. on society remains profound, as seen in creative projects like the game-themed coffins, which show how deeply video games have penetrated various aspects of life.
