Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Suffers Another Blackout, 19 Diesel Generators Activated

According to Главком: On April 14, the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant lost all external power, plunging it into a blackout. The plant's 19 backup diesel generators automatically activated, a critical measure that prevented the overheating of reactor cores and spent nuclear fuel storage pools. External power was later fully restored.

This was the 13th complete blackout the facility has endured since its occupation by Russian forces began on March 4, 2022. The plant, which is the largest in Europe and the third-largest in the world by total capacity, consists of six 1 GW nuclear reactors. The blackout occurred after the last remaining external power line to the plant failed.

Safety Concerns Raised

Energoatom, Ukraine's state nuclear operator, expressed deep concern over the safety of the Zaporizhzhia plant under Russian control. The agency stated:

'The operation of Europe's largest nuclear facility under the management of Russian invaders systematically poses a threat to the entire European region.' - Energoatom

Energoatom also emphasized that 'the nuclear power plant must be returned to Ukrainian control as soon as possible.' The safety of the Zaporizhzhia plant is under intense scrutiny, as its condition has significant implications for regional security far beyond Ukraine's borders. The repeated power failures at the occupied facility create a persistent risk of a radiological incident.

The ongoing situation at the plant remains a source of major international concern. Given its strategic importance for European energy security, restoring full Ukrainian control is widely seen as essential for ensuring proper safety protocols and regional stability.
