Security Incident at the U.S. Capitol

According to Главком: Police in Washington, D.C., arrested an 18-year-old man in possession of a loaded rifle near the U.S. Capitol. The individual was driving a white Mercedes SUV toward the building when law enforcement officers stopped him. This event occurred just one day before the President's annual State of the Union address, a major national event that draws heightened security. The suspect was also found to be wearing a tactical vest and gloves.

Officers ordered the young man to drop his weapon, which he complied with. Inside his vehicle, authorities discovered a Kevlar helmet and a gas mask. This arrest comes less than three months after an attack near the White House that resulted in the death of one National Guardsman and left another injured, highlighting ongoing security concerns in the capital.

Security for Major State Events

The incident took place as preparations were underway for U.S. President Donald Trump's State of the Union speech at the Capitol. Police spokesperson Sullivan emphasized the seriousness of these preparations, stating,

'We take the planning for this event very seriously and will be prepared to ensure security.'

This is not an isolated case; in the summer of 2025, police detained another man near the Capitol who was transporting multiple weapons in his car, including pistols, a bow, and arrows.

The arrest underscores the elevated security measures surrounding significant government events in the United States, particularly in light of recent violent acts. It occurred as police were intensifying surveillance to prevent potential threats. This event also points to the persistent security challenges during public addresses by high-ranking officials, considering the history of violence in the nation's capital.
