Coaching change for Ukraine's youth national team

According to Главком: The Ukrainian Association of Football has ended its working relationship with Unai Melgosa, head coach of the country's U-21 side. Appointed nearly three years ago, Melgosa guided the young team to qualification for Euro 2025. However, Ukraine U-21 suffered two losses in the group stage of that tournament and failed to advance to the knockout rounds.

In the current qualification campaign for Euro 2027, Ukraine U-21 sits third in their group after six matchdays. The team has recorded wins over Hungary U-21 and Lithuania U-21, along with draws against both of those opponents. They also lost to Croatia U-21 and Turkey U-21 during this qualifying cycle.

Successor and team outlook

Melgosa was originally brought in to lead the U-21 team as part of a broader system established under former senior national team coach Serhiy Rebrov. The most likely candidate to replace him as head coach of Ukraine U-21 is Dmytro Mykhaylenko, who currently manages the U-19 squad. Notably, the U-19 European Championship finals are set to begin in late June.

It is also worth noting that Ukraine recently played an abandoned friendly against Denmark, in which the team fell behind. During that match, Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch. Oleksandr Romanchuk and Hennadiy Synchuk made their debuts for the Ukrainian national team: Romanchuk started and played the first half against Poland, while Synchuk came off the bench midway through the second half of that game.

The change in leadership for Ukraine's U-21 side could represent a pivotal step in preparing the team for upcoming competitions. Given the squad's results in Euro 2027 qualifying, a new coach will have the opportunity to adjust tactics and training methods, potentially boosting performance in future matches. Strong showings by the youth team could also open up new pathways for young players to break into the senior national squad. Optimism surrounding the coaching change is paired with hopes for renewal and improvement within the team.

The transition in coaching for Ukraine's U-21 team comes at a crucial time, especially as the squad prepares for future challenges. In a related development, the new head coach has made significant decisions regarding player selections, including calling up a goalkeeper based in Israel.
