Commemorating the Heavenly Hundred Heroes

According to Главком: On February 20, the Day of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and First Lady Olena Zelenska paid tribute to those who died during the Revolution of Dignity. The ceremony took place at the memorial cross on the Avenue of the Heavenly Hundred Heroes in Kyiv, where many citizens gathered to honor those who gave their lives for Ukraine's freedom and independence. The Heavenly Hundred refers to the protesters killed during the 2014 uprising, a pivotal moment in modern Ukrainian history.

The observance of this day was established by a presidential decree, underscoring the national importance of remembering these tragic events. The most significant loss of life occurred in February 2014, when mass shootings of Revolution of Dignity participants took place during clashes in central Kyiv. This day has become a symbol of the Ukrainian people's struggle for their rights and dignity.

'Ukrainians have always defended what is theirs. They defend independence. Dignity. The right to a free life. It was the people who won freedom for Ukraine. Ordinary people who care about Ukraine's future and how Ukrainian children will live. We remember what it cost in 2014.' Volodymyr and Olena Zelenskyy

Honoring the Heavenly Hundred Heroes is a crucial part of Ukraine's collective memory and a symbol of resilience in the fight for democratic values. These events remain highly relevant today, given the ongoing challenges Ukraine faces, highlighting the importance of unity and the readiness to defend the country's independence.

Marking this day encourages society to reflect on the values of freedom and dignity for which the heroes fought and calls for the continuation of their cause under present circumstances.
