UK and France to Build New European Anti-Missile Shield, Zelenskyy Announces
E3 Nations Step Up Support for Ukraine
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed that the E3 countries-the United Kingdom, Germany, and France-have pledged substantial new assistance to Kyiv. In an interview with The Guardian, he stated that the leaders of these nations have agreed to bolster Ukraine’s missile defense capabilities and collaborate on a joint European anti-ballistic system. This commitment emerged from a meeting held in London on June 8, 2024.
During the summit, the presidents and prime ministers not only addressed security concerns but also discussed tightening sanctions against Russia. Zelenskyy commented:
'The E3 countries will help us with anti-ballistic defense. By the way, I hope we can develop a European anti-ballistic system together with the United Kingdom. We are working on this.' Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Additionally, the Ukrainian president emphasized the need to transition his country’s military to a professional contract-based force. 'Being a soldier is dangerous, and we must provide them with decent salaries because they are giving their lives,' he stressed.
Meeting with the British Monarch
Zelenskyy also held talks with King Charles III at Windsor Castle. Following the discussions, the E3 leaders put forward five conditions for achieving peace in Ukraine, calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to agree to an immediate and full ceasefire. The participants included Zelenskyy, UK Labour Party leader Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
This gathering of E3 leaders with Ukraine’s president highlights the critical role of international backing for Kyiv amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The promised missile defense support and the development of an anti-ballistic system could significantly strengthen Ukraine’s security. At the same time, the proposed peace conditions signal the global community’s readiness to actively mediate, potentially paving the way for more constructive negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
As discussions about strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities continue, the recent talks between Zelenskyy and E3 leaders shed light on the urgent need to address Russian military losses and enhance air defense systems. This collaborative effort underscores the strategic importance of international partnerships in bolstering Ukraine's security amid ongoing threats.
