Zelenskyy Open to Putin Summit: Key Issues on the Agenda
Potential Summit Between Ukrainian and Russian Leaders
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed his readiness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This statement was confirmed by Ukraine's Foreign Minister, Andrii Sybiha, who noted that the purpose of such a meeting would be to discuss a peace agreement. According to Sybiha, the president is prepared to engage with Putin to resolve critical issues stemming from the ongoing conflict. This potential high-level diplomacy follows years of war and numerous failed negotiation attempts.
The proposed leaders' meeting would follow a recent trilateral meeting in Abu Dhabi, where separate talks were held between representatives of both countries' security agencies, including military intelligence and General Staffs. During these negotiations, the sides discussed:
- Ceasefire parameters,
- Mechanisms for monitoring and verifying a truce,
- The alignment of terminology.
Issues likely to be raised at a Zelenskyy-Putin summit include the status of occupied territories and the situation surrounding the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Sybiha emphasized that it is precisely to address these matters that the Ukrainian president is willing to enter into dialogue.
Prospects for Dialogue
A meeting between the leaders of Ukraine and Russia could represent a significant step toward achieving regional stability amid the protracted war. Discussions on a peace deal and security concerns, particularly regarding the Zaporizhzhia plant, indicate a potential reopening of diplomatic channels. For any progress to be meaningful, the outcomes of such talks must lead to a tangible reduction in hostilities and an improvement in the humanitarian situation within Ukraine.
