New Talks Set: Zelenskyy and Fico Agree to Meet Again—Here’s What They Discussed
Phone Call Between the Leaders of Slovakia and Ukraine
According to Главком: Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone conversation to address bilateral relations, Ukraine’s European integration, and potential conditions for ending the war. During the call, Slovakia reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s bid for European Union membership.
'I confirmed that Slovakia backs Ukraine’s aspirations to join the EU, because we want Ukraine-our neighbor-to be a stable and democratic nation.' Robert Fico
Fico also stressed that any peace agreement in the conflict with the Russian Federation would be impossible without the consent of the Ukrainian side.
Upcoming Meeting in Yerevan
The two leaders agreed to meet on Monday in Yerevan during the European Partnership Summit. 'We arranged a brief meeting on Monday in Yerevan at the EPS summit, and we will continue our work in a joint government format, visiting each other’s capitals,' Fico added.
This conversation highlights the importance of continued support between Slovakia and Ukraine, despite differing views on certain issues. The leaders are working to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation within the framework of European integration. Slovakia’s backing is crucial for Ukraine as it pursues EU membership, especially amid the ongoing war with Russia and the need for regional stability.
As the dialogue between Slovakia and Ukraine progresses, it's important to note that the European Parliament has raised concerns regarding the rule of law under Fico's leadership, suggesting a potential freezing of EU funds for Slovakia. This situation could impact Slovakia's support for Ukraine's EU aspirations. For more details on this developing issue, see our coverage on EU funding concerns related to Fico's governance.
