Ukraine Celebrates Its Border Guards
According to Главком: On April 30, 2026, Ukraine marked Border Guard Day. In recognition of the professional holiday, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded state honors to personnel and units of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine (SBGSU). During his address, he expressed gratitude to the border detachments serving in the Sumy, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, and Odesa regions. Additionally, rapid response units, border aviation, and the Maritime Guard were recognized for their service.
Recognizing Combat Brigades and Their Sacrifice
President Zelenskyy underscored the critical role of border guards, specifically highlighting combat brigades:
“We take pride in the established combat brigades 'Pomsta,' 'Forpost,' 'Stalevyi Kordon,' 'Hart,' and the mobile border unit 'Dozor.'” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
These units played a pivotal role, notably being among the first to confront Russian forces on February 24, 2022.
Historically, Border Guard Day in Ukraine was observed on November 4 until 2003, following the adoption of the 'Law on the Border Troops of Ukraine.' That law was repealed in 2003 with the passage of the new 'Law on the National Border Guard Service of Ukraine.' Since 2018, the celebration has been moved to April 30, as established by a presidential decree dated April 27, 2018.
This holiday has become a significant occasion that highlights the vital role border guards play in ensuring national security and protecting Ukraine’s state border. Amid the ongoing challenges facing the country, this recognition carries special weight, as these units not only provide physical defense but also bolster the morale of the population, serving as a reminder of the importance of preserving the nation’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
