According to Главком: On June 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke by phone with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs. Their conversation centered on cooperation under the Drone Deal initiative and Latvia’s contribution to the PURL program. Latvia has decided to provide an additional contribution, a significant step in strengthening Ukraine’s defense capabilities. Zelenskyy stated,
“This is very important for us: every contribution means more lives saved from Russian attacks.”
Security Cooperation
The discussion also covered collaboration and joint projects under the SAFE framework. The Ukrainian president emphasized that Latvia is a valuable partner and expressed a willingness to assist its friends with expertise in defense and battle-tested equipment.
“We discussed with Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs cooperation within the Drone Deal. The president noted the work of our team of specialists in Latvia. We appreciate this and are always ready to help,”
Zelenskyy said.
A key point of the call was the opening of the first negotiation cluster, which Latvia welcomed. “Edgars congratulated Ukraine on opening the first negotiation cluster. Latvia’s position is clear and principled: the remaining clusters must be opened as quickly as possible, and we hope other partners will be equally principled,” Zelenskyy emphasized.
The two leaders also coordinated their positions ahead of the NATO summit and other engagements with partners. This phone call followed a meeting between Zelenskyy and Latvian Defense Minister Andris Sprūds, who made Ukraine his first foreign visit after being appointed. This cooperation underscores the importance of international support and coordinated security efforts.
