Meeting of the President of Ukraine with the Archbishop of Cyprus

According to Главком: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with the Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios on January 7, 2026. During the meeting, they discussed important issues related to peace negotiations and the restoration of religious sites that have been damaged due to Russian aggression. Zelensky emphasized the importance of humanitarian support for Ukraine, noting that medical and food aid, as well as resources for the restoration of religious buildings, are extremely relevant during the war.

Recognition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine

The Church of Cyprus recognized the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) in November 2020, and the new head of the Church of Cyprus, elected in 2023, supported this decision. This recognition is significant for strengthening ties between the religious institutions of Cyprus and Ukraine. Cyprus, which began its six-month presidency of the European Council on January 1, 2026, has the opportunity to influence discussions on issues related to Ukraine within European structures.

The presidency of Cyprus in the EU Council will last until July 1, 2026, opening new opportunities for further cooperation between Ukraine and Cyprus in the context of supporting peace and recovery after the conflict. Zelensky's meeting with Archbishop Georgios is an important step in strengthening relations between the countries and in efforts to find pathways to a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

This meeting underscores the importance of international support for Ukraine amidst the war, as well as the significance of religious and cultural ties in the recovery process. In the context of Cyprus's presidency in the EU Council, Ukraine has the opportunity to attract additional resources and diplomatic support for the realization of peace initiatives. The development of relationships between religious institutions can contribute not only to humanitarian aid but also to strengthening social stability in Ukraine.
