Ukrainian President Extends Congratulations

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy congratulated António José Segura on his victory in Portugal's presidential election. Segura, who becomes the first socialist to hold Portugal's presidency in two decades, defeated Chega party leader André Ventura in a runoff vote held on February 8. He succeeds the conservative Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who served two consecutive terms in the role.

Key Issues on the Agenda

António José Segura was sworn in before lawmakers in Lisbon on March 9. The Portuguese president is elected for a five-year term and can be re-elected once. In a conversation with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the leaders addressed several critical topics, including:

  • Potential joint weapons manufacturing;
  • The involvement of Portuguese businesses in Ukraine's reconstruction;
  • Ukraine's path toward membership in the European Union.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the crucial need for continued support for Ukraine, stating:

“I thank you for the assurance that defense, financial, humanitarian, and political assistance will continue. We also value Portugal's participation in the Purl program and count on additional contributions.”

These discussions highlight a mutual commitment from both nations to deepen cooperation in these key areas.

António José Segura's election victory opens a new chapter for relations between Ukraine and Portugal. The significant topics covered in the phone call between Zelenskyy and Segura demonstrate a shared interest in strengthening collaboration on defense, economic, and humanitarian fronts. Portugal's continued backing is vital for Ukraine's stability and recovery efforts, as the country continues to defend itself against Russian aggression.

As the situation in Ukraine continues to evolve, it is essential to observe how other nations are responding to similar challenges. Recently, the Polish Parliament Speaker visited Kyiv for discussions with Zelenskyy on security and EU integration, highlighting the importance of regional cooperation in addressing security concerns and fostering political alliances in light of ongoing conflicts.
