Foreign Policy Priorities Revised

According to ХВИЛЯ: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, alongside Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, has laid out updated foreign policy objectives for May and June. The focus is on negotiations to end the war and ensuring European representation in those discussions. Zelenskyy stated:

“Specific tasks have been set regarding talks to conclude Russia's war and the potential for Europe to be represented in this process-for now, these tasks remain non-public.”

This update comes as Ukraine continues to navigate the complexities of its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Engaging Actively with Hungary

A key priority is fostering a constructive dialogue with Hungary’s new leadership. Zelenskyy noted that

“at the team level, we are actively engaging with Hungary's new authorities, and there are prospects for a constructive reset of relations.”

Andrii Sybiha and other officials are preparing for bilateral consultations with the Hungarian side, aiming to normalize ties and build cooperation on mutual respect and mutual reinforcement. “We are ready to take steps forward,” the president added.

A central goal of Ukraine’s foreign policy is to open negotiation clusters in the EU accession process. Kyiv has already completed the necessary steps toward EU membership. In this context, Sybiha briefed the president on communications with Georgia’s foreign minister. Ukraine expects Europe to maintain a strong stance in supporting its aspirations, which are critical for Kyiv's strategic integration into European structures.

The revised foreign policy tasks signal a renewed diplomatic push by Ukraine amid the ongoing war with Russia. Emphasizing peace negotiations with Europe and dialogue with Hungary could be pivotal in shaping a new foreign policy strategy, potentially improving relations with neighboring countries and the European Union. Successful talks may also unlock new opportunities for Ukraine’s deeper integration into European institutions, a strategic priority for Kyiv.

In light of these diplomatic efforts, Ukraine is also preparing a comprehensive proposal aimed at enhancing relations with Hungary. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reset ties and foster cooperation, which is crucial for Ukraine's aspirations within the European framework.
