Zelensky signed a decree on the monument to Mazepa in Kyiv
Plan for the installation of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a decree mandating the government to ensure the organization of an open competition for the best project of a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa in Kyiv. The decree was published in the President's Office. After the competition, the monument is to be designed and manufactured. In addition, the government along with the Kyiv City State Administration must determine the location for the monument and arrange the surrounding area, while the monument should correspond to the architectural environment of Kyiv.
Idea and Context
On June 28, during Ukraine's Constitution Day, Zelensky announced the idea of establishing a monument to Ivan Mazepa. He named Taras Shevchenko Boulevard as one possible location for the monument.
Furthermore, in Odesa, the deconservation of the Duke de Richelieu monument has begun, which has been covered with sandbags since March 2022 due to the threat of Russian shelling. After removing over 1200 bags, damage to the surface of the bronze sculpture and signs of corrosion were discovered. The monument may be sent for restoration.
Establishing a monument to Hetman Ivan Mazepa is an important step in restoring historical memory and national identity in Ukraine. Mazepa, who served as hetman in the 17th century, is a significant figure in Ukrainian history, and his activities provoke active discussions in contemporary society. The competition for the monument's project could serve as a platform for engaging the creative forces of the country and emphasize the importance of historical figures in the national culture.
In addition to the upcoming monument for Hetman Ivan Mazepa, the situation surrounding historical monuments in Ukraine remains critical. For instance, the recent discovery of corrosion on Odesa's Duc de Richelieu statue highlights the ongoing challenges in preserving national heritage amidst external threats. This underscores the importance of both honoring historical figures and maintaining their memorials in the face of adversity.
