Honoring Representatives of the Crimean Tatar People

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a series of decrees to honor members of the Crimean Tatar community and has instructed the government to establish a legal status for the Mejlis, the Crimean Tatar representative body. These actions come during the ongoing Russian aggression, as Ukraine's Muslim community and the Crimean Tatar people observe their 13th Ramadan since the illegal annexation of Crimea. The decrees, numbered 289/2026 and 293/2026, were issued under these circumstances.

Details of the Decrees

Decree No. 289/2026 provides for the awarding of state honors to several representatives of the Crimean Tatar people. Specifically, Deputy Chairman of the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People, Ilmi Umerov, was awarded the Order of Merit, First Class. Producer and author of documentary projects, Akim Galimov, was recognized with the Order of Merit, Second Class. Additionally, the Order of Merit, Third Class, was awarded to a number of individuals from various fields, including:

  • defense sector representatives,
  • human rights activists,
  • religious figures,
  • athletes,
  • civil society activists.

Decree No. 293/2026, which takes effect upon publication, tasks the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine with resolving the issue of legally defining the Mejlis of the Crimean Tatar People as a representative body. Such steps demonstrate support for and recognition of the significant role of the Crimean Tatar people in Ukraine.

Cultural figures were also honored on this occasion. Composer Jemil Karikov received the title 'People's Artist of Ukraine,' and ceramic artist Rustem Skybin was awarded the title 'People's Artist of Ukraine.' These awards highlight the contribution of the Crimean Tatar people to Ukraine's cultural life.

These presidential decrees reflect the importance of supporting the Crimean Tatar people, especially under conditions of prolonged aggression. Recognizing the merits of this community's representatives in various spheres, including culture and defense, is not only a gesture of gratitude but also an affirmation of their importance to Ukrainian society. Defining the legal status of the Mejlis could significantly impact the representation of Crimean Tatars in state affairs, underscoring Ukraine's commitment to fostering the integration and protection of the rights of national minorities.
