Zelenskyy Endorses Open Discussion on LGBTQ+ Rights and Equality
Support for Dialogue on the LGBTQ+ Community
According to Главком: On June 11, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with the Tysiachovesna community and voiced his support for an open conversation about LGBTQ+ rights and equality. During the meeting, participants highlighted the role of cultural products in normalizing LGBTQ+ issues within Ukraine. Veteran Oleksandr Demenko, head of the NGO 'LGBT Military for Equal Rights' and a defender of Mariupol, raised a question about these cultural initiatives. In response, the President agreed to arrange a separate meeting with Demenko, representatives of the LGBTQ+ community, and Ukrainian Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk.
Legislative Initiatives and Transparent Dialogue
Ruslan Stefanchuk, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, has already held a working session with human rights organizations and LGBTQ+ groups. The discussions centered on Draft Law No. 15150, which concerns the recodification of the Civil Code of Ukraine. Stefanchuk outlined four frameworks for legislative changes, which include:
- The Constitution of Ukraine (particularly Article 51, which defines the foundations of marriage)
- Legal precedents from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)
- Current pan-European legal standards
- Achieving a necessary balance of interests within Ukrainian society
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of open dialogue, stating:
“I believe it is necessary and completely normal for society to speak openly about everything. We are all here defending the state, and we have absolutely equal rights, regardless of any prejudices from the 15th century.”
He also praised the veteran’s bravery:
“We are modern people. You are an absolutely heroic figure-you defended our state and continue to do so here. And it is absolutely right that you speak candidly.”
The President remarked that 'our children are much cooler than our adults,' underscoring the need for a progressive approach to societal issues.
This meeting signals a growing focus by Ukrainian leadership on LGBTQ+ equality, potentially marking an important step in aligning the country with European human rights standards. The emphasis on cultural products and legislative reforms also highlights the critical role of public engagement in shaping progressive LGBTQ+ policies in Ukraine.
