Air Defense Boost Urged by Zelenskyy After Russian Drones and Ballistic Missiles Hit Ukraine
Combined Russian Assault on Ukraine
According to ДСНС: Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called for a stronger air-defense shield after Russian forces launched a combined nighttime attack using drones and ballistic missiles. The assault damaged critical infrastructure in the Poltava, Sumy, and Kherson regions, along with residential buildings in Kharkiv Oblast, apartment blocks in Kramatorsk and Odesa, and industrial facilities in Chubynske, Kyiv Oblast. Some people were injured and some were rescued. The president said Ukraine needs more protection, especially additional anti-ballistic-missile packages supplied through PURL. His appeal came in the same week European allies announced new decisions to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
Emergency crews have been dealing with the aftermath since the night. The strike was combined: drones and ballistic missiles. Critical infrastructure was hit in the Poltava, Sumy, and Kherson regions. In Kharkiv Oblast, shelling damaged houses; in Kramatorsk, a guided bomb struck a high-rise, and four people were pulled from the wreckage. Three people were injured in Zaporizhzhia and two in Kryvyi Rih. Odesa saw a residential high-rise hit as well. In Chubynske in Kyiv Oblast, fires at industrial facilities caused by drones were being extinguished.
International Support and Next Steps
European allies took decisions this week to reinforce Ukraine's air defenses. Zelenskyy said:
"Russia keeps investing in missiles and broadening its war, so there must be a stronger answer to that."
He also stressed that
"anything that strengthens protection of the sky effectively saves the daily lives of Ukrainian men and women."
The affected regions include:
- Poltava Oblast
- Sumy Oblast
- Kherson Oblast
- Kharkiv Oblast
- Zaporizhzhia
- Kryvyi Rih
- Odesa
- Kyiv Oblast
- Kramatorsk
The strike targets included critical infrastructure, homes, apartment buildings, and enterprises. In terms of casualties and rescues, Zaporizhzhia had three injured, Kryvyi Rih had two injured, and Kramatorsk saw four people rescued. These events underline the gravity of the situation and the need for ongoing measures to protect civilians.
The combined nature of the attack points to Russia's escalating aggression and its use of multiple weapon types against important targets in Ukraine. This reinforces the need for stronger defensive capabilities and for international backing that can help Ukraine resist these threats. It is also vital that Ukrainian recovery efforts are effective and that victims get the assistance they need.
The recent nighttime assault highlights the ongoing intensity of the conflict, as evidenced by the staggering figures from the previous week, where Ukraine faced a barrage of over 1,900 drones and 144 missiles. This escalation underscores the urgent need for enhanced air defense systems.
