Zelensky Warns of New Offensive Threat from Belarus-Bryansk Axis
Risk of Additional Russian Attacks
According to ХВИЛЯ: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has alerted the nation to the risk of further Russian Federation assaults on Ukraine's northern regions, particularly along the Chernihiv-Kyiv corridor and the Belarus-Bryansk axis. Following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief's Staff, Zelensky ordered the military command to reinforce defenses in these areas. He also urged the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to step up diplomatic efforts regarding Belarus, as tensions remain high. This warning comes amid ongoing concerns that Moscow may drag Minsk into an expanded conflict.
According to the president,
“frankly, we are tired of this constant threat to Ukraine that the Russians might at some point pull Belarus into widening the war. They must understand-the consequences for them will be severe.”
Additionally, Ukrainian forces struck an oil refinery in the Russian city of Kstovo, underscoring the military's active response to these threats. The distance from Ukraine's state border to Kstovo is nearly 800 kilometers. Key targets for long-range strikes in May include:
- Russian oil refineries
- storage facilities
- other oil revenue infrastructure
International Support and Sanctions
On the international stage, Ukraine is receiving signals that negotiations with the European Union may soon open in clusters. A European support program for Ukraine worth 90 billion euros is expected to launch, with initial tranches anticipated in the coming weeks. The president noted that
“the issue of sanctions is always very sensitive,”
and his team is actively communicating with London on this front. Bilateral discussions on sanctions are also expected this week.
Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's readiness for appropriate action: “For our part, we are prepared to take such steps. I count on our partners to be ready as well, and that the Russians will not be able to hide.” Contacts with the U.S. side focus on security cooperation and diplomacy amid Russian threats, highlighting the importance of international backing for Ukraine as tensions escalate.
Overall, the situation on the northern front remains under the military command's control, while Ukraine's diplomatic efforts aim to secure continued support from international partners. The current circumstances point to a significant escalation of Russian threats, particularly regarding potential Belarusian involvement in hostilities. Ukraine's reinforcement of defenses and intensified diplomacy underscore the seriousness of the situation. At the same time, international support-including financial programs and sanctions discussions-will be a critical factor shaping future developments.
As Ukraine prepares for potential escalations, understanding the current military strategies and air defense enhancements is crucial. Recent developments indicate that new Russian offensives are anticipated, prompting the need for enhanced protective measures. This context highlights the urgency of Ukraine's response amid rising tensions in the region.
