New Leadership for Ukraine’s Military: A Strategic Shift

According to ХВИЛЯ: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced the appointment of Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The decision was revealed during an evening address on the 1,609th day of the war, with Zelenskyy stating:

“I have decided that Mykhailo Drapatyi will become the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”

Drapatyi succeeds Oleksandr Syrskyi, who had held the position since February 8, 2024. Syrskyi previously led Ukraine’s efforts in defending Kyiv, the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and the Kursk operation.

Meetings and New Priorities

Prior to the announcement, Zelenskyy held a series of meetings with senior military and security commanders, including Viktor Nikoliuk, commander of the Eastern operational group. Other military leaders who voiced a unified stance included:

Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a full recipient of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, brings extensive combat experience to the role. In May 2014, he used an infantry fighting vehicle to rescue trapped Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol, and in August of that year, he led troops out of encirclement in the Izvaryne pocket. During the full-scale war, Drapatyi played a key role in liberating Kherson and the right-bank region in fall 2022, and in May 2024, he took command of the Kharkiv group and halted enemy advances. Oleksandr Syrskyi, aged 60, is a Hero of Ukraine and a candidate of military sciences, recognized for his leadership in the defense of Kyiv, the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and the summer 2024 Kursk operation.
