Ukraine Marks 1450 Days of Conflict

According to ХВИЛЯ: On February 12, 2023, Ukraine observed the 1450th day of its war with Russia. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the consequences of a massive Russian strike and the state of diplomatic negotiations. He reported that, as of that evening, repair crews were working to restore power in Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and several other regions. The Russian assault on energy infrastructure involved a significant barrage, including 24 ballistic missiles, one cruise missile, and over 200 attack drones. Ukrainian air defense forces managed to intercept a substantial portion of the incoming threats.

President Zelenskyy stated that his team remains in constant contact with American officials, and Ukraine's Defense Minister is currently participating in a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group, known as the Ramstein format. However, Zelenskyy noted that clear responses from Moscow regarding proposals for the following week are still lacking. He emphasized that Russia must not become accustomed to the idea that its missiles and drones provide any advantage, as such actions only escalate the situation and undermine diplomatic possibilities.

President's Remarks on Sports and International Politics

Separately, President Zelenskyy commented on a decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) concerning Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych. The President signed a decree awarding Heraskevych the Order of Liberty, expressing dissatisfaction with the IOC's policy. Zelenskyy argued that sports should not be devoid of memory and respect, and that political maneuvering disguised under other flags only provokes chaos. This comes as Ukrainian athletes continue to compete under immense pressure since the full-scale invasion began.

"At present, Ukraine lacks firm answers from Russia, hearing only manipulations that do not lead to peace."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy

This situation underscores the persistent challenges Ukraine faces in wartime, particularly regarding energy security and international diplomacy. Restoring the power grid after concentrated attacks is critical for national stability, while Ukraine's active participation in forums like the Ramstein meetings demonstrates Kyiv's efforts to secure allied support. Simultaneously, the dispute with the IOC over the treatment of Ukrainian athletes reflects the nation's broader struggle for recognition and respect on the global stage during the conflict.
