Why Syria's Assad Received a Top Ukrainian Award in 2002, According to Zelenskyy
Ukrainian President's Remarks
According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed surprise over why Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad was ever granted a high Ukrainian state award. The decoration, the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, First Class, was presented to Assad on April 20, 2002, under a decree by then-Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma. The official citation credited Assad for his 'significant personal contribution to the development of Ukrainian-Syrian relations.' This historical context highlights how international alliances have shifted dramatically over the past two decades.
Focus on European Security Cooperation
Zelenskyy noted that Assad's regime has since backed Russia's aggression against Ukraine and recognized occupied Ukrainian territories. In light of this, the President stressed the critical need to deepen security cooperation with European nations. He announced a series of upcoming meetings with European leaders, emphasizing the necessity for long-term collaboration to strengthen Ukraine.
"I will be holding meetings with European partners in the near future. Just as we reach agreements in the Middle East and the Gulf, we will reach agreements in Europe-we need long-term cooperation that tangibly strengthens Ukraine," Zelenskyy stated.
He underscored that Ukraine possesses unique military and security expertise unmatched in the world. Zelenskyy also highlighted the importance of discussing funding for Ukraine and matters related to its place within the European Union.
The President's statement underscores the heightened tensions between Ukraine and Syria, particularly given Assad's support for Russian aggression. The growing importance of European partnerships is increasingly evident against the backdrop of the security challenges Ukraine faces. The announced meetings with European leaders could prove pivotal in shaping new international strategies to support Ukraine.
As Ukraine navigates its complex relationships in the region, the recent historic visit by Zelenskyy to Damascus for defense discussions highlights the evolving dynamics between Ukraine and Syria. This visit underscores the critical need for Ukraine to reassess its alliances and strengthen security ties, particularly in light of Assad's previous support for Russian actions against Ukraine.
