An Interview with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

According to ХВИЛЯ: In a March 2026 interview published on POLITICO's YouTube channel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy detailed his strategy for holding the current frontline to prepare for eventual peace talks and assessed Russia's military capacity. He also stated Ukraine's intention to complete the internal reforms required for European Union membership by 2027. This interview provides a rare glimpse into Kyiv's long-term strategic thinking amidst the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukrainian forces have reclaimed 430 square kilometers of territory in recent months, demonstrating continued military activity. He noted Ukraine's support for a ceasefire plan proposed by the American side approximately a year prior.

"We supported it... to stay where we stand and not to de-occupy territories," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Peace Talks and Domestic Reforms

The President expressed his belief that negotiated diplomacy is the only viable path to end the war.

"Today, we want to end this war through negotiation, through diplomacy, and that is precisely why we must hold the front line. This is not about large-scale offensive operations," stated Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

He acknowledged that Ukrainians are weary from the fighting but added, "they have not lost their dignity and they have not lost themselves."

When evaluating Russia's military potential, Zelenskyy remarked, "All their strong soldiers are dead or are on the territory of Ukraine," pointing to the severe losses sustained by Russian forces. On the subject of potential compromises for a peace agreement, he clarified, "Peace is not an emotional thing. Hatred is about emotions. Peace is a very concrete document that can give our people the opportunity to live and stop the war."

Furthermore, President Zelenskyy stressed the critical importance of internal reforms for European integration. "We have set a plan to be ready on our part by 2027," he added, underscoring Ukraine's ambitions for EU accession. These statements reflect the country's dual-track strategy of pursuing stability and development while engaged in a protracted conflict.

President Zelenskyy's comments signal Ukraine's intent to continue defending its territorial integrity while simultaneously laying the groundwork for future peace negotiations. The endorsement of a ceasefire plan and the focus on domestic reforms highlight the nation's pursuit of stability and integration with Europe, which are pivotal steps within the context of a prolonged war. These actions could form the basis for subsequent diplomatic efforts and bolster international support for Ukraine.
