Ukraine War: Day 1497

According to Главком: As the full-scale war in Ukraine enters its 1497th day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has responded to recent Russian statements. Speaking at the Bucha Summit, he addressed Moscow's claim that the war could end if Ukraine withdraws from the Donbas region. Zelenskyy questioned this logic, asking why Russia would set further conditions if seizing Donbas was its sole objective. He expressed astonishment that anyone could believe such assertions, given the conflict's prolonged duration and Russia's established pattern of escalating demands.

Combat Operations and Consequences

Over the past day, Ukrainian forces reported 140 combat engagements. Russian attacks included 85 airstrikes, which involved 266 guided aerial bombs, and the use of 9,132 kamikaze drones. In total, Russian forces conducted 3,964 strikes on Ukrainian settlements and military positions, 77 of which were from multiple launch rocket systems. Intelligence suggests Russia's planned spring offensive aims for the complete capture of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, a strategic goal it has pursued since 2014.

Zelenskyy further argued that Russia's primary aim is to exert pressure on the United States ahead of its upcoming midterm elections, seeking to influence American foreign policy. He expressed hope that negotiations could return to a constructive process, rather than being driven by Russia's emotional reactions. This context highlights how the Kremlin often times its diplomatic and military maneuvers to coincide with Western political cycles.

Amid the intense fighting, settlements hit by airstrikes include:

  • Hlukhiv, Volfyne, Yastrubshchyna, Lisne, Vilna Sloboda in Sumy Oblast;
  • Havrylivka, Lisne, Levadne, Pokrovske in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast;
  • Vozdvyzhivka, Novoselivka, Shyroke, Charivne, Mala Tokmachka, Orikhiv in Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

The ongoing combat underscores the heightened regional tension and the lack of progress in peace talks. Zelenskyy's concerns about Russian intentions and pressure on international partners reveal the complex geopolitical landscape Ukraine navigates. Continued support from Western allies remains critical, as their responses will significantly shape the conflict's future trajectory.

In light of the ongoing conflict and increasing pressure from Russia, President Zelenskyy's stance on peace negotiations remains critical. His recent remarks challenge the credibility of Moscow's claims, emphasizing the need for a trustworthy dialogue.
