Oslo Talks Focus on Ukraine's Security Guarantees

According to 5 канал: On October 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky convened in Oslo with US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside Norway's Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre and Finland's President Sauli Niinistö. The meeting centered on critical issues including security guarantees for Ukraine and a US-backed proposal for an energy ceasefire. Additionally, the possibility of a trilateral summit involving the key leaders to resolve the conflict was explored.

Steve Witkoff, representing former President Donald Trump, plans to deliver a document to the Russian side outlining various security guarantees. Zelensky commented on the discussions:

"We discussed security guarantees, and I am grateful to the American side for reiterating that these guarantees must be robust. The document Steve will present to Russia details different forms of security assurances. We will await their response following this."

Exploring New Avenues to End the War

The talks also addressed potential pathways to end the ongoing war. Zelensky emphasized Ukraine's support for the US proposal on an energy truce:

"We have proposed multiple options. We are willing to refrain from targeting sensitive Russian energy infrastructure if Russia ceases attacks on ours. Putin has rejected this. Nevertheless, we continue searching for solutions. We have clear ideas on achieving peace and stand united with our European partners in these efforts. We also want the Americans to communicate these ideas to the Russians."

It is important to note that Russia has refused to halt strikes on Ukraine’s energy facilities despite discussions aimed at peaceful resolution. A US Air Force aircraft carrying Witkoff landed at Pulkovo Airport, where he was received by Putin’s special envoy Kirill Dmitriev. The negotiations took place at the Konstantinovsky Palace. According to Yuri Ushakov, Putin is expected to meet with Witkoff during the morning of October 20.

Hence, the Oslo meeting marked a significant attempt to stabilize the situation in Ukraine, though the prospects of progress remain uncertain due to Russia's rejection of peace initiatives.

This gathering highlights ongoing international efforts to mediate the Ukraine conflict and underscores the crucial collaboration between Ukraine and its Western allies. Given Russia's refusal to compromise, the role of mediators such as the US and European nations is becoming increasingly vital in shaping the conflict’s trajectory. The outcomes of this meeting are anticipated to influence future negotiations and regional security strategies.
