Plot Against Military and Media Personnel Foiled

According to Главком: On the 1459th day of the war, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has thwarted a plot by Russian mercenaries. The group was planning attacks against Ukrainian military personnel, intelligence officers, and media figures. In a meeting on February 21, 2026, Zelenskyy received a detailed report on the operation from SBU Deputy Head Oleksandr Poklad. This incident underscores the persistent threat of covert Russian operations targeting key Ukrainian figures.

In a related move to bolster national security, President Zelenskyy also held a phone call with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Following this discussion, Zelenskyy signed decrees enacting two new sanctions packages. These measures target individuals and companies that assist Russia in financing its war and evading international restrictions. The sanctions specifically apply to over two hundred tanker captains and dozens of Russian defense industry enterprises.

The fact that we managed to prevent such crimes, involving some prominent names, is a significant achievement for our special services.

The President emphasized the critical importance of cooperation among all Ukrainian special services and law enforcement agencies in countering Russian criminal activities.

Significance of International Support

The successful disruption of the plot demonstrates the proactive capabilities of Ukrainian agencies in confronting threats from Russia. Meanwhile, the new sanctions are designed to significantly hinder the financial channels supporting the aggressor, which could impact the broader regional conflict dynamics. These actions highlight Ukraine's dual-track strategy of domestic counter-intelligence and international economic pressure.

  • Ukraine's close cooperation with NATO underscores the vital role of international alliances in facing external security challenges.
  • Such coordinated steps are expected to contribute positively to Ukraine's long-term security and stability.
