Meeting of the National Security and Defense Council on Road Safety
According to Рубрика — Суспільство: President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky stated that a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) regarding road safety will take place soon. This decision was made as a result of a recent traffic accident in Kyiv, where a car collided with another vehicle at high speed and flew onto the sidewalk. Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the situation on the roads with Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko, emphasizing the need to strengthen accountability for systematic violators of traffic rules.
Traffic Accident in Kyiv
On August 17, a collision involving two BMW vehicles occurred in Kyiv. A 36-year-old man driving a BMW X3 was exiting a secondary road without obeying the 'Give Way' and 'Traffic from the Right' signs. As a result of the collision with a BMW X7, driven by 31-year-old Kyrylo Ostrovskyi, the X3 vehicle flew onto a restaurant's summer terrace and overturned. The driver of the X3 was injured, however, visitors to the establishment and passersby were unharmed. According to the president, the driver of this vehicle should have already lost his right to drive.
Volodymyr Zelensky emphasized that effective measures need to be taken, rather than limiting changes to traffic rules to cosmetic fixes.
“We need to strengthen the accountability of those who systematically violate road rules and disregard life. What is needed are not cosmetic changes to the rules and accountability, but effective steps,”
he noted. The preparation of legislative changes regarding road safety is planned to involve Members of Parliament, public organizations, and state institutions. The NSDC secretary will coordinate this work.
The president also mentioned petitions related to road safety, particularly one filed by Oleksii Hlushych, the father of a 12-year-old boy who died in a car accident. This situation underscores the need for urgent changes to legislation to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The president's statement about the NSDC meeting and the need for changes in legislation regarding road safety indicates the seriousness of the situation with traffic accidents in Ukraine. The high number of accidents and systematic violations of traffic rules point to the need for a comprehensive approach to solving the problem. The preparation of new initiatives involving deputies and public organizations could be an important step in strengthening law and order on the roads and reducing risks to citizens' lives.
In light of the recent traffic incident, it is crucial to explore how tougher penalties for habitual traffic offenders are being implemented by the National Security and Defense Council. This step aims to enhance road safety and prevent similar accidents from occurring in the future.
