Presidential Summit in Bucharest

According to Главком: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă in Bucharest on March 12. The visit resulted in the signing of several bilateral agreements covering key areas of cooperation.

  • Strategic partnership;
  • Energy collaboration;
  • Cross-border infrastructure;
  • Joint defense equipment production.

Specifically, the leaders signed a joint declaration on strategic partnership, a framework agreement for cooperation in the energy sector, and a joint statement on co-producing defense equipment. This meeting underscores Romania's role as a key NATO ally and neighbor for Ukraine, particularly amid regional security challenges.

Focus on Key Initiatives

President Zelenskyy stated that the discussions with President Ciucă were centered on strengthening the energy and economic resilience of both nations.

“Today, my meeting with Romanian President Nicolae Ciucă is primarily about increasing the energy and economic strength of both our peoples, so that we can do more together for the national security of our states,” he emphasized.

The negotiations also covered projects in the oil and gas sector, including potential routes for transporting American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Ukraine via Romania.

Zelenskyy also announced plans to open new border crossing points this summer. During his visit, he is scheduled to meet with Romanian Prime Minister Ion-Marcel Ciolacu and visit an F-16 pilot training center. Furthermore, Ukraine and Romania are working on constructing two new power transmission lines and implementing joint projects for extraction on the Black Sea shelf.

To strengthen cultural ties, Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a decree establishing a Day of the Romanian Language in Ukraine, to be celebrated annually on August 31. This step is designed to foster deeper cooperation between the countries at all levels.

The summit between the Ukrainian and Romanian presidents highlights the critical importance of their strategic partnership, especially given current security and energy challenges. The signed agreements could significantly impact the development of economic links and help ensure energy independence for both states. Additionally, cultural cooperation initiatives, such as establishing the Day of the Romanian Language, demonstrate a commitment to strengthening intercultural connections, a vital aspect of advancing bilateral relations.
