On Day of Mourning, Zelensky Accuses Russia of Repeating Nazi Germany’s Mistakes

Zelensky accuses Russia of repeating Nazi mistakes
Зеленський заявляє, що Росія повторює страшні помилки минулого та завдає нових втрат Україні.

Statement from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky

According to Главком: On June 22, the Day of Mourning, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Russia has failed to learn from the tragedy of World War II, continuing its aggressive policies and launching new strikes against Ukraine that have resulted in casualties. He called on the international community to intensify pressure on Moscow. This date carries deep symbolic weight for millions, marking the day in 1941 when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union.

The head of state noted that Russia marked June 22 this year with fresh attacks on Ukrainian towns and villages. A Russian strike on the Sumy region killed:

  • a child
  • a man
  • an elderly woman

Three family members were wounded. Fatalities and injuries were also reported in the Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Kherson, Donetsk, and Kharkiv regions. Zelensky stressed that today’s Russian leadership follows the same logic as past aggressors, showing utter disregard for human life.

'This Russian war has no just cause: Putin is driven by the exact same motives as previous aggressors. He holds life in the same contempt. He is equally obsessed with some delusional and unwanted “empire” of his own,' Volodymyr Zelensky

He also emphasized the need for continued joint efforts, thanked Ukraine’s partners for their support, and noted that Ukraine has put forward all necessary proposals for diplomacy. 'Our collective pressure on the aggressor must push Russia to a point where it has no other option but diplomacy and ending the war,' the president stressed. The full-scale war has now lasted longer than World War I, while Ukraine continues to strike Russia’s logistical infrastructure near the Kerch Strait.

The Symbolism of the Day of Mourning

President Zelensky’s statement highlights the dire situation in Ukraine, where the consequences of Russian aggression continue to be felt at every level. June 22, as a day of remembrance, has become a symbol not only of historical tragedies but also of the urgent challenges the country now faces. His appeal to the international community to ramp up pressure on Moscow reflects Ukraine’s efforts to secure support in its fight against aggression and to achieve peace through diplomacy.

As the conflict escalates, the necessity for a unified response from the international community becomes increasingly urgent. Zelensky's remarks coincide with a series of recent assaults on Ukrainian territories, emphasizing the need for heightened international pressure on Russia to deter further aggression and promote diplomatic resolutions.
