Ukraine Seeks EU Membership Talks as Zelensky Visits Estonia
Ukrainian President’s Visit to Estonia
According to МЗС: During his trip to Estonia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held critical discussions on security and his country’s path toward European integration. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha met bilaterally with Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna. Their talks covered key issues including the battlefield situation, security guarantees for Ukraine, and the prospects of Ukraine joining the European Union.
Sybiha briefed his Estonian counterpart on the current state of the conflict, noting that Ukraine has managed to stabilize the front line, hold its positions, and continue reinforcing them. The president’s visit also included participation in a summit of the Nordic-Baltic Eight, where regional security and cooperation were on the agenda.
The diplomats discussed launching negotiations on the first cluster of Ukraine’s EU membership.
“It is extremely important for us to open talks on the first cluster as soon as possible, and immediately afterward, the remaining five clusters. We count on continued Estonian support along this path. I also stressed the importance of maintaining a strong Ukrainian army after the war ends as a fundamental factor for the security of all Europe,” Sybiha stated.
Additionally, the talks addressed tightening sanctions against Russia and the Drone Deal initiative, which aims to enhance Ukraine’s defense capabilities.
“Together with Estonia, we will keep working to strengthen the security of Ukraine and all of Europe, bolster our resilience, increase pressure on the aggressor, and move closer to a just and lasting peace,” Sybiha added.
Estonia also decided to restrict entry for Russian combatants, demonstrating its readiness to support Ukraine in its fight for independence and territorial integrity. The Ukrainian president’s visit to Estonia thus marked a significant step in reinforcing bilateral ties and advancing European integration and regional security.
