The Historic Residence at 10 Downing Street

It is noteworthy that 10 Downing Street serves as the official residence and office of British Prime Ministers. The original front door, carved from black oak around 1735, is now preserved in the Churchill Museum, while the current door was repainted in its now-iconic dark green in 1908. During the Second World War, the building narrowly survived; a bomb struck the kitchen and state dining room on October 14, 1940.

The last private tenant of one of the houses in the complex was a man named Chicken. Since 1997, some prime ministers have chosen to reside in the larger adjoining house at 11 Downing Street. Interestingly, the famous black door can only be opened from the inside and has no keyhole. The residence is also home to its Chief Mouser, a cat named Larry, who has been in residence since 2011.
