Zelensky meeting with Dutch Prime Minister
В Україні очікують на прибуття голландського мінного тральщика Генічеськ у червні після візиту Зеленського до Нідерландів.

President Zelenskyy's Trip to the Netherlands

According to Главком: During a state visit to the Netherlands beginning April 16, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy secured the transfer of a critical naval asset, presented state awards, and signed a new defense cooperation agreement. He met with Ukrainian sailors training on an Alkmaar-class minehunter vessel. Once their training is complete, the vessel will be transferred to Ukraine in June and commissioned as the Henichesk.

The Strategic Role of the Henichesk

The arrival of the Henichesk is a key step in building Ukraine's naval mine countermeasures capability, as it will become the fifth vessel in this specialized fleet. The original ship of this name was lost near the Kinburn Spit in 2022. The crew currently training is mastering the use of underwater drones to locate, identify, and neutralize sea mines. The Netherlands is providing this second vessel to Ukraine; the existing fleet already includes the ships:

  • Cherkasy
  • Chernihiv
  • Mariupol
  • Melitopol

For the duration of the war, these vessels will be based in the United Kingdom.

While in the Netherlands, President Zelenskyy presented state awards to Ukrainian defenders. Among the honorees was Dutch Chief of Defence Onno Eichelsheim, who received the Order of Merit, Third Class. Zelenskyy and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte also signed a defense cooperation pact, under which Amsterdam will invest 482 million euros in Ukrainian defense. Furthermore, in Middelburg, the President accepted the Four Freedoms Award, highlighting the strong partnership between the two nations. This visit underscores the vital and ongoing international military support for Ukraine as it defends its sovereignty. The agreements and vessel transfer represent a tangible commitment to enhancing Ukraine's ability to secure its maritime domain against persistent threats.

The recent agreements made during President Zelenskyy's visit, including the significant €482 million defense pact with the Netherlands, further solidify international support for Ukraine's military capabilities. This enhanced cooperation aims to bolster Ukraine's defense infrastructure, especially in light of the ongoing conflict and the strategic importance of the newly acquired naval assets.
