Zelenskyy in Saudi Arabia: Ukraine Negotiates Air Defense and Anti-Drone Cooperation
Ukrainian President Meets with Military Experts in Saudi Arabia
According to Главком: During a visit to Saudi Arabia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held talks with Ukrainian military specialists who had been in the country for over a week. Zelenskyy arrived on March 26, and the central focus of the discussions was cooperation on airspace protection and countering drone threats. This engagement highlights Ukraine's growing role as a security partner beyond its own borders.
The meeting concluded with an announcement of intent for Ukraine and Saudi Arabia to sign a formal security cooperation agreement, specifically covering air defense. President Zelenskyy noted that Ukraine is actively working on exchanging interceptor drones for air defense missiles. He emphasized the unique expertise Ukraine has developed, which has garnered significant interest from multiple nations in the region.
Expanding Cooperation with Middle Eastern Nations
Zelenskyy stated that the United States, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Jordan, and Kuwait have all approached Ukraine regarding potential collaboration.
“The United States of America has also approached us regarding their bases in the territory of Middle Eastern countries,” he noted.
The President added that Ukrainian specialists have already successfully neutralized Iranian drones in one Middle Eastern country and expressed readiness for long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that the primary task for Ukrainian experts in the region is to identify vulnerabilities and determine the necessary changes to enhance protection for people from Iranian drones and missiles.
“We discussed the key points of what is needed for greater air defense strength in Saudi Arabia, and this primarily concerns approaches to shooting down drones,” he stated.
Simultaneously, the President indicated that the direct sale of Ukrainian interceptor drones to regional countries is currently blocked at the state leadership level. However, the Ukrainian side is prepared to support the defense of those who assist Ukraine in defending its independence.
The meeting between Ukrainian experts and President Zelenskyy in Saudi Arabia underscores the intensification of Ukraine's international security cooperation, particularly given the threat posed by Iranian drones. This development signals growing Middle Eastern interest in Ukrainian air defense experience, which could have strategic implications for regional security. Key aspects remain airspace protection and the potential for technology exchange, which could significantly enhance the defensive capabilities of partner nations.
