Ukrainian President Meets with European Leaders at G7 Summit

The meeting resulted in an agreed schedule for opening the next five negotiation clusters and discussions on the conditions for the first financial tranche. The leaders also addressed the 21st EU sanctions package against Russia.

This high-level meeting, part of the broader international forum, aimed to deepen cooperation between Ukraine and the European Union. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to the EU for opening the first negotiation cluster for both Ukraine and Moldova, stating:

The first cluster, named 'Fundamentals,' covers key issues such as the rule of law, democratic institutions, and fundamental rights.

Financial Support and Sanctions Under Discussion

During the meeting, the parties also discussed the terms for the first financial tranche, which Ukraine expects to receive in June. These funds are planned to bolster the country's air defense capabilities. Zelenskyy emphasized:

"As long as Russia intends to continue the war, we must strengthen Ukraine's air defense and work on coordinating security guarantees for our country" - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

In addition, participants reviewed the 21st EU sanctions package, targeting Russia's energy and financial sectors, as well as trade and cryptocurrencies. Earlier, Ursula von der Leyen announced that the EU would allocate €75 million for a new protective sarcophagus at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. These steps reflect the EU's ongoing efforts to support Ukraine amid current challenges.
