Volodymyr Zelensky Addresses Donald Trump’s Proposal to End the War

Zelensky expressed Ukraine’s willingness to pursue steps toward deescalation, but only if critical conditions are met-specifically, the safeguarding of energy infrastructure and the uninterrupted export of food supplies. Earlier, Trump claimed that ongoing fighting had caused Russia to lose control over its oil refining capabilities.

Sharing his response on the social media platform X, Zelensky stressed the significance of this issue. He highlighted Ukraine’s numerous diplomatic efforts aimed at halting the war and ensuring security. The Ukrainian leader stated:

“Indeed, this Russian war against Ukraine and against common sense must come to an end. Since the first year of the full-scale invasion, the consequences have been profound: loss of countless lives, destruction of towns and villages […] Every additional week of this war, let alone each passing year, adds even more challenges.”

Deescalation Efforts and Trump’s Continued Position

Trump reiterated his call for a swift resolution to the conflict, pointing to a shortage of diesel fuel that he attributes to the fighting rather than to U.S. actions against Iran. During the NATO summit in Turkey earlier in July, Trump suggested that Ukraine’s attacks on Russian oil refineries might escalate tensions but could also pave the way for ending the war.

Zelensky intends to discuss potential deescalation measures with international partners at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York. He emphasized, “We are ready to engage on this and will address it with our partners on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.” He also noted that Russia is suffering losses as well, made more evident by modern technology.

Meanwhile, Trump has signed legislation imposing sanctions on Russia, a move Zelensky urged to be implemented without delay. The Kremlin welcomed Trump’s appeal to refrain from striking Russian oil refineries but remained silent on attacks within Ukraine.

This dialogue between Zelensky and Trump highlights the crucial role of global diplomacy amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The involvement of international stakeholders could prove instrumental in finding pathways toward peace.
