Zelensky Responds to Trump-Putin Ceasefire Proposal: Key Details Emerge
Ukrainian President's Take on the Short-Term Truce Idea
According to ХВИЛЯ: Volodymyr Zelensky has weighed in on the concept of a temporary ceasefire reportedly discussed between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian leader instructed his officials to reach out to Trump’s team in order to clarify the specifics of the proposal. He emphasized that Kyiv is committed to achieving peace and is carrying out the necessary diplomatic groundwork to bring the war to a genuine conclusion.
“I have instructed our representatives to contact the U.S. President’s team and find out the details of the Russian proposal for a short-term silence,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
The president stressed that Ukraine is pushing for a fundamentally different arrangement. “Our proposal is to stop the fire for the long term, to guarantee reliable security for people and lasting peace. Ukraine is ready to work toward this in any dignified and effective format,” he added.
Zelensky also noted that the seriousness of the Russian initiative will depend on its content: “We’ll find out what exactly is being discussed-whether it’s a few hours of safety for a parade in Moscow or something more substantial.”
Negotiations and Political Landscape
Earlier, following a 90-minute phone call with Putin, Trump told reporters he had proposed a limited truce with Ukraine to the Russian leader. From the Russian side, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov clarified that the Kremlin is willing to declare a ceasefire specifically for the period of the May 9 celebrations, when Russia holds its military parade on Red Square.
This situation highlights the complex diplomatic terrain in which Ukraine is striving for long-term solutions to end the conflict, while Russia offers short-term options that may be driven by political events such as holiday observances. Talks between the Ukrainian side and the Trump team could become a critical step in understanding the Kremlin’s true intentions and potential paths toward peace.
It is also worth noting that Ukraine remains focused on securing long-term security guarantees, underscoring the seriousness of its stance in peace negotiations.
As the situation unfolds, Zelensky's commitment to a long-term peace contrasts sharply with the potential for short-term agreements. This raises concerns about the implications of any territorial concessions.
