President Meets with Law Enforcement on National Police Day

According to Главком: On July 4, 2026, marking Ukraine's National Police Day, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gathered with police officers to present state awards and the nation's highest distinction-the title of Hero of Ukraine. This ceremony served as a solemn tribute to fallen officers and a recognition of those still serving amid wartime conditions.

During the event, the President and attendees observed a moment of silence in memory of deceased police personnel. The families of the late Roman Zelenskyy and Oleksandr Kuralech received the Order of the Gold Star, Hero of Ukraine, awarded posthumously. Additionally, Police Senior Sergeant Yurii Illiashenko was granted the Gold Star for commanding his KORD special unit to hold a combat position near enemy forces for 276 days and successfully leading his team out of encirclement on two separate occasions.

Defenders Decorated with Military Orders

The President presented defenders with the following orders:

  • Bohdan Khmelnytskyi Order, III Degree
  • "For Courage" Order, II and III Degrees
  • Danylo Halytskyi Order

Special ranks of Police General of the second and third classes were also conferred. Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to law enforcement officers serving in the "Liut" and "Khizhak" combat brigades, as well as those from the KORD special unit and police rifle divisions.

"In the time of full-scale war, the police are far more than just law enforcement-they are the ones who help people," the President stated.

National Police Day is the professional holiday for officers who daily ensure public safety, protect citizens' rights, and combat crime. During the full-scale invasion, police have taken on additional roles beyond traditional law enforcement-evacuating civilians, documenting Russian war crimes, operating in frontline cities, and participating directly in combat missions.

This event underscores the critical role of Ukraine's National Police in wartime, where officers not only fulfill their conventional duties but also shoulder extra responsibilities tied to civilian safety and protection. The awarding of these heroes highlights recognition of their contributions to national defense and the maintenance of law and order-especially vital during this challenging period for Ukraine.

In addition to honoring police officers, President Zelenskyy has consistently recognized the contributions of military personnel and civilians in various ceremonies. For instance, during the recent Constitution Day celebrations, he presented awards to those who have shown extraordinary bravery and commitment to the nation. Such acknowledgments highlight the collective efforts of all sectors in safeguarding Ukraine during these challenging times.
