Zelenskyy Reveals Attempts to Meet Putin, Warns of Escalating Pressure on Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Addresses EU Intergovernmental Conference
According to ХВИЛЯ: During a speech to the European Union's Intergovernmental Conference on June 15, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed efforts to arrange a meeting with Russia aimed at ending the war. According to him, Moscow rejected these overtures. He suggested that the next logical step could involve ramping up pressure against Russia. Zelenskyy also urged the EU to fast-track Ukraine's accession process.
Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine had proposed meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin anywhere and had also explored the possibility of a sit-down with Russia on the sidelines of the G7 summit, with the involvement of the United States and France.
“We discussed with the U.S. and France the possibility of a meeting with Russia on the margins of the G7, with all democratic states participating. Putin does not want this.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
The day before his address, Zelenskyy had discussed the option of a meeting in the United States with former U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukraine's Path Toward the EU
A significant portion of the president's remarks centered on Ukraine's progress toward EU membership. He emphasized that 'Ukraine has earned the right to move faster. And that is precisely the kind of political decision Europe needs today.' Speaking from Chișinău to conference attendees, Zelenskyy highlighted the necessity of opening the remaining five clusters in Ukraine's EU accession negotiations.
Toward the end of his speech, he noted, 'We will see what comes of this. If Russia also turns down this opportunity, additional pressure will be required.'
Currently, President Zelenskyy is traveling to France for the G7 summit, where he hopes to discuss further steps regarding relations with Russia and Ukraine's European integration.
Zelenskyy's address underscores Ukraine's intensified diplomatic efforts amid its ongoing war with Russia and the country's drive for European integration. The failed attempt to arrange a meeting with Russian leadership highlights the challenging situation Ukraine faces and the critical need for international support. At the same time, his call to accelerate EU accession signals Ukraine's readiness for active reforms and integration steps, which could strengthen its position on the global stage.
