Sharp decline in interceptor missile supplies

Partners, including the United States, have cited the war in the Middle East as the official explanation. The president also pointed out that European allies have scaled back their own involvement in the Middle East conflict, even though they previously supplied Ukraine with anti-ballistic missiles. As a result, Ukraine now faces a shortfall of the very weapons needed to shoot down Russian ballistic projectiles. Zelensky did not dismiss the possibility that the shortage could be politically motivated, for instance, as a way to pressure Kyiv into being more accommodating.

“I cannot say whether there are other causes beyond the Middle East. Perhaps these are political moves aimed at making Ukraine more pliable. In my view, that is likely,” - Volodymyr Zelensky.

Winter readiness priorities

Speaking at a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), Zelensky also admitted that some cities and regions are behind on their resilience plans. He outlined three main tasks for the coming winter:

• strengthening protection for critical infrastructure,
• ensuring shelters and bomb shelters meet required standards in both number and quality,
• expanding anti-ballistic defense capabilities.

“There are currently three priorities for winter: stronger protection of critical infrastructure, adequate shelter provision in terms of quantity and quality, and greater anti-ballistic capacity,” - Zelensky emphasized.

The president also recalled the Russian attack on Kyiv in the early hours of August 5, which killed one person and wounded 15 others. Fires and damage were reported in four districts of the capital: Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi, and Desnianskyi. That incident highlights why security and defense questions remain urgent for Ukraine as the war continues.

The drop in interceptor missile supplies could seriously undermine Ukraine's ability to defend itself, particularly given the intensity of Russian strikes. The priorities laid out by the president point to the need for rapid steps to bolster defenses, which grows more pressing with each new threat. International support for Ukraine stays critical, especially as global geopolitical tensions evolve. The comments come as Kyiv prepares for another winter season that is likely to bring renewed attacks on energy infrastructure.
